Wilson 5×5 Skill Test: A Standard for Pistol Proficiency
What is the Wilson 5×5 Skill Test?
The Wilson 5×5 Skill Test is a widely recognized shooting drill developed by Bill Wilson, one of the most respected names in competitive shooting and founder of Wilson Combat. This test evaluates a shooter’s draw speed, accuracy, reload efficiency, and one-handed shooting skills.
Used in IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) competitions and firearm training programs, the 5×5 Skill Test serves as a universal benchmark for pistol proficiency.
Drill Setup
Equipment Needed:
- Handgun (semi-automatic or revolver)
- 25 rounds minimum per run
- IDPA Silhouette Target
- Shot timer for performance tracking
- Magazine pouch (for reload stages)
Target & Shooter Positioning:

- Target: IDPA silhouette target placed at 10 yards.
- Shooter Start Position: Hands at sides; concealment optional.
- Handgun Holstered: Shooter begins with the pistol loaded and holstered.
Drill Execution
The Wilson 5×5 Skill Test consists of four shooting strings, each designed to test different aspects of marksmanship:
- String 1: Draw from the holster and fire 5 shots to the body.
- String 2: Strong-hand only: Draw and fire 5 shots to the body.
- String 3: Draw, fire 5 shots to the body, perform a mandatory slide-lock reload, and fire 5 more shots to the body.
- String 4: Draw, fire 4 shots to the body and 1 shot to the head.
Scoring & Performance Metrics
Scoring System:
The total score is determined by the sum of the times for all four shooting strings. A penalty of 0.5 seconds is added for each point down on the target.
Performance Classifications:

| Master | 15.01 – 20 seconds |

| Sharpshooter | 25.01 – 32 seconds |
| Marksman | 32.01 – 41 seconds |
| Novice | 41.01 – 50 seconds |
| Needs Work | More than 50 seconds |
